AirLogix and PacifiCare Health Systems Expands Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Management Program

(Dallas, TX, Oct. 09, 2002) AirLogix, a pioneer in respiratory disease management, announced an expanded agreement with Cypress, Calif.-based PacifiCare Health Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: PHSY), to offer its comprehensive Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) management program PacifiCare's Medicare+Choice health plan members in Washington, Oregon, Arizona and Colorado.

The expanded agreement will impact a total population base of more than 300,000 members in the six states and calls for AirLogix to provide COPD management services to PacifiCare's members with COPD.
Designed to aggressively monitor and manage the care and health of patients with COPD, the AirLogix Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease management program helps prevent avoidable health care utilization resulting from exacerbation of chronic lung disease. This is accomplished through patient and caregiver education, assistance in managing patients' medications and regular interaction with a licensed respiratory therapist. The program is supported by proprietary system technology for member identification, risk assessment and stratification and offers member enrollment, follow-up and outcome tracking and reporting.

AirLogix has been providing respiratory disease management services for PacifiCare's members in California and Texas for more than a year.

"We chose to expand the AirLogix COPD program because we believe our initial program in Texas and California has helped improve the quality of care for our members with chronic respiratory conditions," said Gordon Norman, M.D., PacifiCare Health Systems' vice president of Health Care Quality. "The AirLogix COPD management program is one way we're taking action to improve the health and well-being of our members with COPD and help better manage their health and thus improve their quality of life."

"PacifiCare shares our goal of effectively managing the symptoms and progression of COPD and improving the quality of life for their members," said Susan B. Riley, president of AirLogix. "The AirLogix COPD management program offers quality, cost-effective solutions that help educate patients with COPD and reduce the expense of crisis intervention within the COPD population. We are proud to work with PacifiCare to help improve the health of their members with COPD."

According to the American Lung Association, COPD is the fourth-leading cause of death in the United States among seniors over the age of 65 and the only major cause of death for which mortality is rising. AirLogix has developed a specialized method of managing the care of patients with COPD based on the implementation of sound medical and financial practices wrapped in hands-on clinical respiratory experience. This program is based on guidelines from the Global Initiative on Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) and uses highly trained and experienced Respiratory Therapists to assess, educate, assist and monitor patients with COPD.
